Asus Zenfone 3 Max (ZC520TL) Vs Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016)

If I have to pick the best smartphone launches of this season under Rs 15,000, my obvious choice would be the Samsung Galaxy J7 and the Asus Zenfone 3 Max. But then, which one is superior to other? – Let’s find out in the following comparison.

Note that there are two variants of the Zenfone 3 Max, and I am using the ZC520TL variant for this comparison test, just to be fair.

Update: Our in-depth review of Zenfone 3 Max

Zenfone 3 Max Vs Samsung Galaxy J7 Comparison

Build Quality And Display

The Asus Zenfone 3 Max has a 5.2-inch IPS display built with the premium plastic material that feels sturdy to hold weighs just 148 gms. The Samsung Galaxy J7, on the other hand, has a bigger 5.5-inch AMOLED display with similar build quality but weighs 170 gms. The build quality of both the smartphones up to the mark but here are some key takeaways from this comparison.

– The Galaxy J7 is bulkier and heavier than the Zenfone 3 Max and somebody like me who likes compact smartphones, I like the Zenfone 3 Max in this aspect.

– The AMOLED display produces deeper blacks, hence sharper colors and works out pretty good even in direct sunlight. Therefore, the display of Samsung J7 is better to some extent. Asus Zenfone 3 Max’s display also outputs equally good quality pictures, but the blacks are not as darker.

Performance Comparison

The Asus Zenfone 3 Max has a Mediatek MT6737M Quad-core 64-bit processor with 1.44GHz frequency and 3 GB of RAM. It has a Mali-T720 GPU processor. All these hardware specs help the Zenfone 3 Max to churn out better performance for almost all the tasks. It runs seamlessly through multiple apps and never lagged during extended gaming sessions or watching movies. It does warm a little but never too uncomfortable to hold.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 has a Qualcomm MSM8952 Snapdragon 617 Exynos 7870 Octa-core processor with 1.6GHz frequency and 2 GB RAM. Even though Zenfone 3 Max has a faster processing power per core, the Galaxy J7 has more cores, hence the good performance overall.

Samsung Galaxy J7 vs Zenfone Max 3 Comparison

Camera and Sound Quality

Both the smartphones feature 13 MP rear camera but the Galaxy J7 has f/1.9 aperture and has a 28mm lens whereas, the Zenfone 3 Max has f/2.2 aperture. Both the smartphones capture excellent images in bright environments, but in low light conditions Zenfone 3 Max outperforms Samsung J7.

The ‘low light mode’ we have seen in flagship camera phones by Asus like the Zenfone Zoom & latest Zenfone 3 was impressive, and now it’s helping mid-budget smartphones like Max take much better photographs in low light. In the similar environments, J7 struggles to produce better details and to avoid noise.

The story changes a lot while testing the front facing camera which again both of them have 5 MP camera. The front shooter on Galaxy J7 comes with an LED-flash. Therefore, it was fun to click selfies in darkness. The Zenfone 3 Max doesn’t have a front-facing flash, although it did clicked good images using the low light mode when flash turned on J7 is the clear winner here.

Battery And Storage

Asus launched the Max in the Zenfone 2 series with a purpose to provide the users with an enormous battery life that will last longer than the average smartphones. The Zenfone 3 Max isn’t an exception here, it follows its legacy and comes with a big 4,130mAh Li-Po battery, which gives the smartphone enough juice to keep running for like two days on regular usage or more than one full day on heavy usage.

The Zenfone 3 Max has 32 GB internal storage that can be extended up to 256 GB via micro SD slot.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 has a 3,300 Li-ion battery that gives an extended screen on-time considering that it has a larger display than the Zenfone 3 Max. The Galaxy J7 was surprisingly impressive in this aspect as it had a smaller battery and a bigger screen but still gave the Zenfone 3 Max a good fight, but the Zenfone 3 came out as a winner due to sheer numbers.

The Galaxy J7 has a 16 GB internal storage which can be extended up to 256 GB via micro SD slot.

So twice as much the internal storage & faster RAM is built-in the Zenfone Max 3 compared to Samsung Galaxy J7.

Apart from these most miscellaneously features and connectivity options are very much similar in the both devices.

Verdict

While the Samsung Galaxy J7 squeeze some extra juice with processing power & front LED flash advantages, Zenfone Max 3 has better RAM, twice the internal storage, significantly better rear facing camera & unparalleled battery life.

It all boils down to price when you are an Indian consumer like I am, and Zenfone Max 3 offers all those goodies at just Rs.13,500 compared to the Samsung Galaxy J7 that costs about Rs.16,000.

My obvious choice would be Zenfone Max 3, and I would recommend Samsung J7 only if you take too many low-light selfies.
