Today we will Start with Quick Path Interconnect, But before speaking on Quick Path Interconnect we will first see what is System Interconnect?
The microprocessor and its microarchitecture provide the processing power for a computer, the system interconnect plays vital role in connecting the microprocessor to the rest of the system components. These system components can be System Memory, I/O devices or other microprocessors. As we know that a Powerful microprocessor can execute instruction faster, but there can be a potential bottleneck (State where the processor has to wait) any time. Whenever a bottleneck occurs, the performance of the processor reduces. Hence the performance of a particular processor depends on the speed of access of the System Memory. In Multiprocessor system not only access to System Memory important but also communication between the Processors themselves plays a vital role.
Quick Path Technology:
Quick Path Architecture is a Platform architecture that provides High speed connections between microprocessor and the external memory and the peripheral devices. The Quick Path Interconnect provides High Bandwidth and Low Latency, which deliver the interconnect performance needed to Unleash the new microarchitecture and deliver the Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS) features.
It features new system architecture that
1. Integrates a Memory Controller into each microprocessor
2. Connects processors & other components with a new High-Speed Interconnect
The Above figure shows that the architecture includes Memory Controller integrated into the microprocessors, which are connected together with a High-Speed, Point to Point Interconnect.
