How a Degree in Computer Science Can Help You in Business

If you want to start your own business, you might think that having a degree isn’t all that important. After all, you can learn what you need to know as you go along, and if you’ve chosen a business sector that you already know, is there any point in studying further to get more knowledge and qualifications that no one is going to ask to see?

The answer is yes. Just because you might not have to send your resume off to potential employers anymore once you start your own business, doesn’t mean that having a degree isn’t going to be of use to you, especially one in computer science. There are many excellent reasons to study for this kind of degree, and if you want to do well in business it’s something you should certainly consider. Here are some of the reasons why.

Your Back Up Plan

No one wants to think about their brand new business failing, but the truth is that many businesses do. It might not be anything to do with how they are run; it might simply be that no one needs the product or service, that there is an economic crash, that you find you don’t enjoy being a business owner, and many other reasons.

If you find that your business has to fold you’ll need a ‘back up plan’ in order to have a career and continue to earn money. Earning a masters in computer science online means that you have the qualifications to enter a career field that can give you that money and a great deal of job satisfaction. It’s a good way to have something to fall back on should you realize that business is not for you.

If your business is very new and you aren’t making enough money to survive on just yet, you can always start up a consultancy on the side, earning additional money through IT work and computing trouble shooting, as this is something that companies across the world are always going to be on the lookout for.

Computing Knowledge

All businesses, big or small and in any sector, are going to utilize computers in their business in some way. It might only be to create invoices and connect with customers, but it could be much more than that such as using computing technology to create the product they sell, or to keep a customized app up to date.

Having knowledge in computing can be vital to a small business owner. It means not having to outsource when there is an IT issue because you can fix the problem yourself, thus saving money. It also means that fixes can happen more quickly. Plus, you can be more innovative with your products, your website, and your social media accounts because you have the knowledge to back up what you are doing.

Transferable Skills

A degree in computer science doesn’t just teach you about computing, as useful as this is always going to be. It also teaches you many other skills which you can term ‘transferable skills’, meaning you can use them across any type of business you start. These skills include:

  • Research
  • Time management
  • Prioritizing
  • Teamwork
  • Presenting
  • Communication
  • Critical thinking

All of these and more will help you in your computer science degree and will also help you to run your business. Even if you never use the computer science element, knowing everything else is always going to be of great use and give you a good head start in business.

Be the Expert

If you can prove that you are an expert in your field then you can set yourself apart from the rest of the competition, of which there will be a lot. There are a number of different ways to do this, including writing a regular blog and/or guest posts, creating a vlog (video blog), giving talks and workshops, and even writing an eBook.

Another way is to have as many qualifications and accreditations as you can. If they are directly related to your subject then this is good because you can prove to anyone who needs or wants to know that you absolutely know what you are doing and that you are an expert.

If the subject you are studying isn’t related to your business, as might be the case with computer science, then it will still show expertise; you can prove that you have the brains to study for a degree, that you are interested in different topics, and that you are happy to keep learning. These are all going to point people in the right direction when it comes to buying from you. They know they can trust you because you invest in yourself and your business.

Networking

You will meet many different people at college, whether you choose to study in a brick and mortar school or online. These people can become close friends and they can help you too. They can help you when it comes to your degree, especially if you need to work in teams to gain credits. They can also help you when it comes to your business.

You will have heard the term ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’, and although that’s only partly true (you need to have enough knowledge as well as knowing some good people), it will be useful to know people who can give business advice, boost you further, and connect you with others who can also help you.

Networking is essential in business if you want to be successful, and it all starts with your degree and your college life, no matter which way you choose to enjoy it.

Experience

With a computer science degree you can go on to get a good placement for work experience, or even a full time job depending on what you want to do. Why is this good if you want to start a business? It’s because it’s often a good idea to start your business on the side so that you have an income coming in from your main job and your business can grow over time.

A computer science degree means that you can have a well-paid, interesting job while you work on your business, and that means you can have the best of both worlds.
