Three of the Best Themed Games of 2021

Another step into the 2020s and another fantastic year of gaming opportunities reach our doorsteps. We might still be early in the yearly gaming release cycle, but 2021 has already shown itself to be full of potential. Taking a look at themed games, in particular, we want to explore just a few of the titles which both we and our readers have loved. It’s been a strong start so far, and with games like these already on the digital shelves, we can’t wait to see what comes next.

Vikings – Valheim

Before it was released, gamers were skeptical about what Valheim would do. Combining real details of history alongside Norse mythology, Valheim adapted its themes to an already bloated survival genre. It was an uphill battle, and one which many spectators were convinced would fail on release. As it turns out, Valheim would go on to become one of 2021s biggest unexpected hits.

Combining retro and modern graphics, and a survival system that streamlined many of the clunkier aspects of the genre, itsold millions of copies within a couple of weeks. With an interesting world, enjoyable base building (once you figure out how to stop your roof from collapsing), and strong multiplayer support, Valheim is a title that accomplished what few could. Even better, all this quality came from the early access version of the game, with coming additions seeking to engage players for many more nights in front of their digital hearths.

Realistic Live Streamed Games – Online Casinos

Many online casino games like slots rely on themes, and these can run the gauntlet from realistic to abstract, from historical to mythological. A recent trend more popular trend, and the one that stuck out the most for us, came from the integration of the live casino theme.

Available on desktops and as a mobile casino online set of games, live titles essentially utilize streaming technology to create an in-casino feel from anywhere with an internet connection. While these started small a few years ago, modern online casinos offer dozens of live games like blackjack, hold ’em, baccarat, mega ball, and much more. Combining the experience of a physical casino with the convenience of online play, and the ability to create your own dress code, these games continue to impress.

Skating – Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2

Originally released in 2020, the 2021 PS5 and Xbox Series release of THPS 1+2 was exactly what the new consoles needed. Originally one of the most famous series of games on the PlayStation One and Two, the later Tony Hawk’s games would become infamous for their drop in quality, and their reliance on gimmicks.

With the release of Tony Hawk’s 5 in 2015, many fans were all too eager to call the series dead. The game strayed too far from its roots, with players wanting to go back to the halcyon days of mainstream skating fun. With THPS 1 + 2, that’s exactly what they got. Including old stages rebuilt with cutting edge graphics, and the systems of newer games like the revert, the new game was universally loved. Even better, our old skills still let us beat the pants off of our friends.

As we approach the second half of 2021, gamers still have a lot to look forward to. Until then, we’ve still got our hands on enough great games to keep us entertained through the middle months. And who knows, by the end of the year, maybe Cyberpunk will finally be playable on our older consoles.
