The Future of Virtual Reality Video Games

With improvements in headsets and a rise in game titles in recent years, virtual reality video games look set to become much more commonplace in the near future. Read on to find out more.

Virtual Reality Video Games and Their Future

The technology of virtual reality enables you to feel like you are actually inside a game environment. Armed with a headset and a glove or suit with biosensors attached, you can move through a game world and interact with its features using your natural movements. The sensors record your movements and feed them back into the game to generate the appropriate on-screen responses.

Although the selection of VR games is still quite limited, there are various fantastic video games specifically designed for VR environments. Some of the best on the market are:

  •   Half-Life: Alyx.
  •   Trover Saves the Universe.
  •   Star Wars: Squadrons.
  •   Space Pirate Trainer.
  •   Astro Bot: Rescue Mission.

Virtual reality casino games are also now available, and you can expect to see much more of a crossover between VR and casinos in the coming years. Virtual reality opens up a plethora of opportunities for online casinos. For example, at present, you can experience playing a real-life casino game like roulette or poker with a real-life dealer at a casino live. In the not too distant future, the experience could be transferred to a completely virtual environment, where you can interact with croupiers and players more, and even order drinks from the bar. You could even see VR online casinos that are set in outlandish environments, such as an alien planet or Ancient Egypt.

The Future of Educational Virtual Reality Video Games

The future of virtual reality video games goes way beyond outlandish environments and more fully-immersive gameplay. There is a great future for educational VR games too. Many developers are currently working on various educational games. For instance, zSpace is creating virtual instruction courses, which could open up new ways of teaching in classrooms.

In fact, virtual reality has the potential to redefine learning as we know it. For example, rather than plumbers needing to embark on lengthy courses, they could instead plug into a virtual instructional game that instantly gives them the information and know-how they need. If the plumber is fixing a boiler, by putting on a VR headset, he or she could have instant access to every piece of information concerning the boiler. All the plumber would need to do is follow the virtual instructions, much in the same way as Neo from The Matrix movies learns Jiu-Jitsu instantaneously by having the instructions downloaded into his head.

The Rise of Virtual Reality Arcades

Although VR headsets have become more affordable in recent years, they can still be very pricey, and that is one reason why it has taken a while for virtual reality to take off. Due to the high price point of virtual reality hardware and software, many gamers are turning to virtual reality arcades.

Just as before the dawn of affordable consoles, gamers would pack video game arcades to play their favourite games, fans of VR games are now doing the same. Around the world, there are now various arcades specifically for playing virtual reality games. For example, the Yokey Pokey VR arcade in Brooklyn, which opened in 2017, has 42 headsets from the leading manufacturers of virtual reality games, such as PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and Samsung Gear. Such arcades are becoming popular not just because games are affordable to play, but also because they encourage the VR gaming community to come together. Even when VR headsets and games become more affordable in the coming years, you can still expect VR arcades to be popular.
