Responsible Gaming: Differentiating Legal and Illegal Online Casinos

Technology has made many things and activities easier for many. The internet has definitely made plenty of things more convenient. Many would now heavily rely on their mobile devices and are learning so many things online. However, there is still a lot to consider when using technology and we always have to ensure our safety.

Today, we can now pay your bills, view our bank account, play games, and even play real money or casino games like poker, baccarat roulette, and blackjack online in India or anywhere else in the world online. What used to be impossible, like being able to play on a small device that you can also use to communicate with others, is now the norm these days.

It’s so normal that sometimes, we ought to forget the things to consider especially in playing real money games online. In fact, research suggests that many gamblers can’t even distinguish what a legal and illegal gambling site. Many of them are confused and fortunately, governments are starting to see this.

In Comes Conscious Gaming

Conscious Gaming is a nonprofit group that is mostly associated with online gambling. It is an organization set up by GeoComply. Its goal is to align the responsible gaming needs of all stakeholders in the industry.

GeoComply is the most-trusted solution for precise geolocation services in the online casino gaming or iGaming sector. Its chairman and co-founder, Anna Sainsbury, once talked about the growth of iGaming and its challenges when they first donated to Conscious Gaming.

Sainsbury said, “We have been very fortunate at GeoComply to have a front seat to the growth of the iGaming industry across the United States over the past decade. We recognize with this growth comes challenges and GeoComply is proud to commit funding to Conscious Gaming to help the industry fulfill its responsibilities and obligations to responsible gaming and a safe environment for players.”

Since then, Conscious Gaming is known to have successfully deployed PlayPause which is a self-exclusion gambling tool. This tool was first deployed in Pennsylvania last year and with this, online gamblers or anyone online can self-exclude across multiple states to prevent themselves from gambling. This would promote safer gambling practices.

What’s New This Year?

Conscious Gaming is now making the news once again as they announce that they want to teach online gamblers to know which online casino sites are legal and illegal through Bettor Safe. This is a campaign that was recently launched to promote the advantages of playing at a licensed casino site and to also disseminate the risks of playing from unlicensed or illegal sites.

The campaign started in New Jersey and Pennsylvania as based on research, this is where many players are confused about what a legal gambling site really is. According to Conscious Gaming, they will also soon add more programs or efforts that are more state-specific.

The vice president of the non-profit group, Seth Palansky, talked about how important this campaign is. He said, “This campaign comes at a pivotal moment when American sports fans are gearing up for the NCAA basketball tournament amid a pandemic that continues to push individuals online.

“Now more than ever we must educate consumers and equip them with the tools to make more informed decisions about online betting.”

Why Bettor Safe?

Based on research, 35 percent of individuals in the United States do not know whether online betting is already legal in their states, and this is why many are still easily deceived by illegal or unlicensed online casinos. They wager on these sites without knowing that the operators are unlicensed which equates to not knowing the risks of what they are doing.

Based on Conscious Gaming’s survey in the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, they also found that 25 percent of respondents in NJ and over 30 percent from Pennsylvania were unaware that online betting is already legal in these states. Some of them even thought that it was still illegal. The survey also found that 75 percent of the respondents from both states can’t tell whether a casino site is legal or illegal.

The executive director of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, Kevin O’Toole, believes that this campaign is an important resource to empower the customers.

Bettor Safe can let consumers know which sites are approved by the state Division of Gaming Enforcement. It also lets consumers know which logos to look for to determine if a casino site is working or operating legally. The campaign has everything that a gambler should know to check for the legitimacy of a casino site. What’s even better about it is that the campaigns for each state are specific or dependent on the local laws and regulations.
