Kingston MobileLite Wireless G3 Review: More Than A Data Transfer Hub

There are many new innovative tech gadgets that come up every now and then but are seldom of practical use. Over the past few years, there have been many portable SD storage devices which are wireless enabled. These devices are used to transfer data from one storage device to another without the need of a computer. These devices always lacked practicality and therefore, have not been adopted by the masses. Kingston, by launching MobileLite, has added features that can make it more practical for the masses to adopt it.

I being a techie, have a constant need to transfer data from one device to another. Therefore, I have to keep a lot of different types of cables with me all the time. The Kingston MobileLite Wireless G3 is a device to solve this problem of mine. So has it succeeded? Let me give that answer in this detailed review.

First Impressions & Features Of MobileLite Wireless G3

Kingston has launched 2 variants, MobileLite Wireless G3 and MobileLite Wireless Pro. The latter is more expensive, but we received the MobileLite Wireless G3, so I let’s talk about it. The MobileLite Wireless G3 comes neatly packed in a blue-white color box. On opening the box, you see a small white color device.

It is very small and handy and comes with a USB cable and an SD card reader. You quickly realize that it is much more than just a portable device which you can use to transfer data. It has an RJ45 ethernet port which can convert any wired internet network into a WiFi network as it can act as a WiFi access point.

There is also a standard USB-B port and a charging port on this device along with a power button. There are 3 LED indicators which indicated the battery level, WiFi, and ethernet. The MobileLite Wireless G3 also has an inbuilt 5,400 mAh power bank to charge your smartphone. When the battery indicator is green, it indicates 51% – 100%; orange indicates that it is 25% – 50%; and red indicates that the battery is less than 25%.

Practical Usage

Over the short period of days, the MobileLite Wireless G3 emerged as one of the most important and a frequently used device for me. Mostly I used it as a power bank. It was able to charge my smartphone twice before it needed to charge itself again. Also, it charges our smartphones up to 2x faster than a normal power bank as it has a 2A output.

It supports all the SD card types from SD, SDXC, SDHC and microSD/microSDXC/microSDHC and supports all the file systems of Windows wich are exFAT, FAT32, NTFS, and FAT. Therefore, I didn’t have any trouble with the storage devices I used to transfer my data. It supports SD cards/pen drives having storage capacity up to 2TB. Earlier, I used to face a lot of trouble due to file systems and storage card types, but Kingston has addressed all those issues and eliminated it in this device. For me, this is the most important feature and for this alone, it is worth buying.

Even though many hotels are adopting WiFi networks, when you are a frequent traveler, you may come across some hotels or places where you stay, offer only free wired internet connection. This is where you unlock the true usability of the MobileLite Wireless G3. Insert the LAN cable into this device through the WLAN port and you can easily set up a WiFi network within a minute.

You can then use this WiFi network to connect all your devices to the internet. It also offers two different bands on which you can set your WiFI i.e. on 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Therefore, even as you are using someone else’s network, you can use these features to improve your security. There is no information on the specification of the ethernet port, so I assume it is the standard 100 MB/s port and won’t support higher speeds.

The App Through Which It Works…

I told you all the features and how you can use them, but I didn’t tell you how to access these. Kingston provides an app called MobileLite Wireless through which you can interact with this device. The app is available both on Google Play as well as on Apple App Store.

Install this app on your smartphone and switch on the device. It will create it own WiFi network which you can join through your smartphone’s WiFi. The MobileLite app will acknowledge this and will instantly connect you to the device. You can use the features in the app to set a password for the device so that no one else would be able to access the device in future using the app.

The App is very light and does not take much storage space on your smartphone. The app is neatly designed and very easy to use. Once you’ve connected to the device, you will get all the options at your disposal which you can use to transfer any kind of data from one device to other. The File Explorer tab accesses all the storage devices you’ve connected to the device. Using this, you can transfer from microSD card to a Pen Drive or vice versa or you can transfer files to your smartphone wirelessly with ease. You don’t require a computer in between and also no cables for this purpose. So it saves a lot of time and, therefore, is very useful.

At the bottom, you will see Home, Music, Videos, Backup, and Settings icons. As the name suggests, icons like music and videos will allow you to access specific file types, thereby saving you a lot of time finding them manually. The Backup/Restore will let you save all your images from the camera, contacts, calendar etc from your smartphone with just a click of a button.

The Settings tab is where you can alter all the settings of the device itself. This includes WiFi settings, passwords, restore and backup setup etc.

Another important setting you will find is that you can connect this device to another WiFi network for “Wireless Bridging”. What this does is simply connect you MobileLite Wireless device to external WiFi when your smartphone is connected to the device. It creates a bridge between your smartphone and the external WiFi network. This is a very cool feature as you can easily extend the range of the external WiFi network and let your other devices be connected to MobileLite Wireless device simultaneously.

The only downside in the MobileLite Wireless G3 is that it doesn’t have an inbuilt storage. Due to this, you always need to carry a storage device if you want to transfer data or take a backup. The MobileLite Wireless Pro has an inbuilt storage of 64 GB class 10 and a 6700 mAh battery.

Verdict

Kingston MobileLite Wireless G3 is one of the most useful gadget I’ve found, that has hit the market in past few years. Due to its simple design and tremendous support for all the file systems and storage device types, transferring data becomes hassle free. Streaming data from pen drive to your smartphone is a bit slower but transferring speeds between storage devices that are connected to it physically are very high. The added capability of WiFi access point and power bank makes this device very practical.

This device solves a lot of your problems ranging from WiFi connectivity to data transfer between different types of storage devices to ease of creating backups or restoring them. If you need inbuilt storage and higher battery capacity, then MobileLite Wireless Pro should be your pick, otherwise, MobileLite Wireless G3 is the best you can find on the market with this usability potential. At Rs 10,958 on Amazon, this is the best device for anyone who travels a lot and have a constant need to transfer data between storage devices.
