Manipal University stands tall amongst the best private universities in the country. The university is especially known for its rich and world-renowned alumni base which includes Satya Nadella, Vikas Khanna, Rajeev Suri and many others.

One of the reasons behind this incredible alumni network is that the university is very selective about its students. As in 2016, more than 1.5 lakh candidates applied for admission in the university, from which only 6500 were selected.

Established in 1956, the university was the first college to be affiliated with Karnataka University and got the status of being an autonomous institute in 1993. In 2004, it was rebranded as Manipal University.

1. Satya Nadella

The Microsoft cloud speaks to real world needs. Satya Nadella CEO Microsoft delivers the keynote address at Future DecodedBorn in Hyderabad, Satya is currently the CEO of one of the biggest companies in the world, Microsoft. After Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, he is only the third person to get this rank in the company.

He attained a BE degree in Electrical Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology. Later on, he also studied MS in computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, after this, he completed his MBA at University of Chicago.

Satya Nadella started his career at Sun Microsystems but soon switched to Microsoft. Satya is known to be the biggest contributor in developing Azure, which is the cloud computing platform of the company.

In 2014, he was selected as the CEO of the company. Under his guidance, Microsoft’s share prices have risen by 60%.

Satya has also authored a book named ‘Hit Refresh’, which has been launched recently.


2.Vikas Khanna

Born in Amritsar, Vikas Khanna is not only known to be the most famous chef of India but as an international star chef as well.

Vikas graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel Management from Manipal University in 1994. During his college days, he organized an event named SAANCH, which was targeted at serving various dishes of different cultures from around the country.

Vikas Khanna has worked with famous groups of Hotels like Taj, Oberoi, Leela and Welcome Group. He has also worked with some of the world’s best chefs, like Gordon Ramsay and Bobby Flay.

Vikas owns a restaurant named Junoon, located in New York. He has also written a book named ‘Utsav’.

Vikas has also been a part of the show Masterchef India, as a judge. He has been named in the list of Sexiest Men Alive by People Magazine and is also known to be the Hottest Chef in America.

3. Rajeev Suri

Rajeev Suri belongs to Delhi and currently is the CEO of Nokia. Rajeev Suri is amongst the rare league of CEOs who achieved this position without an MBA.

Rajeev attained a BE Degree from Manipal Institute of Technology. With 26 years of International experience, Rajeev has worked with many companies in roles related to Mergers and Acquisitions, Sales and Accounts.

Rajeev is also the United Nation’s Broadband Commissioner. Currently a citizen of Singapore, Rajeev has lived in many countries like Kuwait, Finland, UK, and Germany.

4. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor

Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor is an orthopedic surgeon by profession. However, he is more famously known to be the first Malaysian astronaut.

Sheikh Muszaphar was born in Kuala Lumpur. His major education has been in Manipal University, where he earned an MBBS from the Kasturba Medical College, which comes under the Manipal University.

He got a chance to travel in space on October 10, 2007 and returned to earth on October 21, 2007. As mentioned earlier, he is the first Malaysian Person to do so.

5. Arun Shenoy

Arun Shenoy is an international music composer, who is famous for being nominated for Grammy’s.

Born in Manipal, Arun completed his basic schooling and pre-university study at Bangalore.

He pursued an engineering degree at Manipal Institute of Technology in 1999.

As a music composer, Arun has several achievements to his name. His album Rumbadoodle was nominated for the best pop album is 55th Grammy awards.

Currently, he is a citizen of Singapore and is the first Singapore citizen to be nominated for Grammys. One of his albums named ‘A Stagey Bank Affair’, was chosen as critics’ pick for best album of the year by Jazziz Magazine.

Anant J Talaulicar

Anant J Talaulicar holds a Graduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Manipal University.

Anant J Talaulicar is the Chairman and Managing Director of Cummins India Limited.

Mausami Singh

Mausami Singh is a graduate of Manipal Institute of Communication, from the batch of 2004.

She is currently working as a Senior Correspondent in IBN7, which is a channel under Network18.

She has also received the award for ‘Best Investigative News Report’ by News Television Awards.

Dr. Annapurna Kini

Dr. Annapurna Kini is an alumnus of Kasturba Medical College of Mangalore, which falls under Manipal University.

She is amongst the world’s best angioplasty surgeons and has performed more than 8200 surgeries with a success ratio more than 99.7%.  She has also been honored with a rare ‘two-star’ recognition.

V Surendra Shetty

Dr. V Surendra Shetty is a BDS graduate from Manipal College of Dental Sciences, from the batch of 1970.

Dr. Shetty has several achievements to his name. He has acted as a member of Dental Council of India from 1998 to 2003. He has also acted as President of Indian Orthodontic Society, and Chairman of Indian Board of Orthodontics as well.

U S Krishna Nayak

Dr. U S Krishna Nayak completed his graduation and post-graduation in Dentistry from KMC College of Dentistry in 1985 and 1987 respectively. He is an eminent dentist and has received 18 awards till now, for his contribution to the field.

Ashok Jain is a graduate from KMC Manipal, from the batch of 1990. He is an entrepreneur and has received the most prestigious entrepreneurship awards, named the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year award by Beta Gamma Sigma International Society’ and ‘Movers and Shakers Award’ for being the business leader in Raleigh.
