Quick Steps to Boost Your Macbook’s Performance

If you are having problems with a Macbook, there is no reason to think that the only solution is to get a replacement

You can solve the problem by applying these tips that will boost the performance of a Macbook. Continue reading and find out what they are.

Step #1 – Quit Idle Apps

Click on the red “X” button does not always close an application on a Macbook. Clicking the “X” will only minimize the app and have it run in the background, consuming resources.

To quit an application, launch the Dock. After selecting an app, you can either right-click, Command+click, or tap with two fingers and choose the Quit option.

Do not neglect to leave applications in the background. Some require a lot of memory, and if not dealt with, they will continue to consume the computer’s resources.

Step #2 – Create More Disk Space

A lack of disk space will cause issues as well. If you have noticed that there is less and less space on the disk every day, here are some options:

  • Transfer some of your files to cloud-based services like Dropbox or iCloud. The latter offers 5 gigabytes for free.
  • Delete old applications, email attachments, and downloads.
  • Get a utility software for cleaning junk files like caches. MacPaw has a comparison article to help you choose one.

Step #3 – Use Activity Monitor

Activity Monitor will help if you are experiencing unresponsiveness and sluggishness while using the Macbook.

Launch the tool and sort applications by memory usage. The heavy consumers ought to be researched more closely. Perhaps such applications do not belong on a Macbook in the first place. Consider looking for alternatives or deleting the applications.

Step #4 – Scan for Malware

Malware, viruses, and other cybersecurity threats do more harm than reduce the performance of a computer.

For example, shopping online with a Macbook and having a virus could lead to your personal data getting in the hands of others.

Instead of taking a risk, get anti-virus software, and have it run in the background at all times. Moreover, scan for threats at least once every week or every two weeks.

Step #5 – Optimize Web Browser

Web browsers can also turn into very sluggish applications when not dealt with properly. Some users like to install every add-on and extension they find. While there are a lot of great upgrades and features, having too many at the same time puts a toll on the system. Every tab you open consumes memory.

And speaking of open tabs, the number should be kept to a minimum as well. Even idle tabs take memory.

Step #6 – Install Software Updates

Software updates fix bugs, improve stability and performance. Whether you have macOS or third-party software, having the most recent version for the software will enhance the performance.

However, software should not be the only thing you update consistently. Whenever there is a new version released for the OS, get it as soon as you as well.

Step #7 – Disable Startup Apps

There is no need to wait for applications to load every time you launch or restart the Macbook. Go to System Preferences. Select Groups and Users. Log in your profile and find Login Items.

There will be a box next to an application. Select an application you want to hide when you log in and tick the box. Save the changes and restart the computer. You will notice the difference immediately.

Step #8 – Tidy up Your Desktop

A desktop should not turn into a place that has all your files and icons. Putting everything on a desktop makes you look messy and puts a toll on the computer’s system.

Every icon has to be rendered when you switch between the desktop and another window. Now imagine what it means when the system has to render a desktop that is full of icons.

Get rid of the habit of sticking every file on your desktop. Instead, organize the files and transfer them to another location on the computer.

Step #9 – Clean Dirt and Dust

Dirt and dust accumulate over time, and it leads to overheating. The issue is more apparent when you are using the Macbook during a warmer season.

That does not mean that you need to wait for summer to clean dust and dirt inside your Macbook. When you notice that the fans are becoming louder, it means that cleaning is in order.

Step #10 – Get SSD and Extra RAM

Adding new hardware is an excellent way to refresh things up and boost the overall performance. Finding RAM for a reasonable price should not be a problem as there are plenty of offers on the internet.

A solid-state drive is also great and will reduce loading time for software that you transfer to SSD.
