How to Download Cydia:

Are there any catches?

None at all. You just need to install a jailbreak that matches your iOS version and here’s what you have to choose from to download Cydia.

iOS 12: Unc0ver Jailbreak

Unc0ver jailbreak is the latest jailbreak and is undoubtedly one of the most advanced. Released by Pwn20wned, originally part of the Electra jailbreak team, Unc0ver is a semi-untethered jailbreak and you will need to use your Apple ID and Cydia Impactor to install it. It has been fully tested and works on all iOS devices on iOS 12 to 12.1.4.

iOS 11 – 11.4.1: Electra Jailbreak

Electra Jailbreak comes to us courtesy of Coolstar and is another semi-untethered jailbreak utility. It will work on all iOS devices running on iOS 11 up to 11.4.1 but, because it is semi-untethered it will require restarting every time your device is rebooted. Plus, if you use a free Apple ID to register, it will need to be installed every 7 days.

iOS 10 – 10.3.3: H3lix Jailbreak

H3lix jailbreak was released by Tihmstar and uses the V0rtex exploit. It works on both 32-bit and 64-bit devices, each having their own download. Again, it is semi-untethered and you will need Cydia Impactor to side-load it onto your iPhone or iPad.

iOS 9 – 9.3.5: Ph0enix Jailbreak

Ph0enix jailbreak only works on the 3 earlier 32-bit devices; anything newer and you are out of luck for iOS 9. It is semi-untethered, requires Cydia Impactor to get it on your device and will need restarting when your device is rebooted.

iOS 8 – 8.4.1: EtasonJB

For those still on iOS 8, we have EtasonJB, brought to us by Tihmstar. The best news is this is a fully untethered jailbreak but it will only work on earlier 32-bit devices. This is a full jailbreak so you won’t need to reactivate it when you reboot your iPhone or iPad.

iOS 7 – 7.1.2: Pangu Jailbreak

Pangu is one of the better-known jailbreak teams and the iOS 7 jailbreak is fully untethered. It will work on any iOS 7 iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and will not need to be activated when your device is rebooted.

iOS 6 – 6.1.6: P0sixspwn Jailbreak

Released by iH8Sn0w, one of the better-known jailbreak providers, P0sixspwn used to be a way of turning a tethered Redsn0w jailbreak untethered; now you can use the tool to install an untethered jailbreak directly onto your device. It works on any earlier iOS device that is still running iOS 6 and there are two versions – Mac and Windows.

ioS 5 – 5.1.1: RedSn0w jailbreak

Redsn0w is one of the best-known names in jailbreaking and is very reliable. It works on Mac, Linux, and Windows, and provides users with a way of installing both tethered and untethered jailbreaks on iOS 5.

iOS 4 – 4.3.5: GreenPois0n Jailbreak

Last but not least is one of the original jailbreaks, providing users on iOS 4 with an untethered utility. It runs on both Mac and Windows operating systems and it comes courtesy of the Chronic Dev team.

So much to choose from!

As you can see, every iOS version has been covered with a jailbreak, although many of the later ones are semi-untethered utilities. Still, something is better than nothing, right?

Let’s move on

Frequently Asked Questions:

If you are still weighing up whether to use Cydia or not, have a look at the answers to some of the more common questions about the app:

Is it Illegal?

Not in the USA, it isn’t. In 2012, the Library of Congress proposed that jailbreaking should be exempted from the DMCA – that was ruled on and jailbreaking is now legal. However, Apple still won’t allow it and they will void your warranty if they know that you have a jailbreak on your device. It’s simple; when your iPhone or iPad has to go back for repair, delete the jailbreak first.

Does it Cost Anything?

No. It comes as a standard part of any of the above-mentioned jailbreak tools, all of which are also free. Where you might have to pay is with one or two of the tweaks. Most cost nothing but some do charge a dollar or two – it’s your choice as to whether you use them or not.

What Does it Do?

Cydia is an app store that offers tweaks and modifications that help you to change how your device works and looks. There are loads of modified apps, including stock apps and games with new features, as well as ringtones, themes, and wallpapers that you can’t get anywhere else. And it is a management tool so you can manage all your apps and tweaks easily.

Do I Need to Jailbreak?

If you want Cydia then yes. It is part of the jailbreak and cannot be used on its own. There are alternatives that don’t need a jailbreak but these do not offer the same level of features and functionality that this app does.

Is it Safe?

Yes, it is. Let me just explain how this works – to jailbreak your device, the tool breaks into Apple’s iOS security. You cant get these features any other way and you cant use customized content either. However, provided you use the official links, they are all perfectly safe to use.

What Can I Download?

An easier question would be, what can’t you download! Cydia is home to so many apps and tweaks it’s hard to know where to start but here are some of the very best:

  • Auxo – the only app to truly bring multi-tasking alive
  • BiteSMS
  • Messages+
  • iFile
  • Merge
  • NoNewsIsGoodNews
  • Sparrow+
  • TetherMe
  • Zephyr

What About Cydia Impactor? Is That a Jailbreak?

No. Cydia Impactor is a very useful tool that lets you install unofficial apps on your device. These are apps that Apple won’t sign so this tool does it for you. It is very powerful and a must-have for any iOS users. And it works on all mobile and desktop platforms.

I Found Another App Source – Can I Use It?

Yes, you can. There are several sources built-in to the app, you can easily add new ones:

  1. Open Cydia and tap Manage
  2. Tap Sources>Edit>Add
  3. Type the URL for the new source in and tap Add Source
  4. When it has been installed, reboot Cydia and you can start using it.

Do be aware

Not all sources are safe. Those built-in to Cydia have been fully tested but external ones haven’t; be very careful of what you add or you could find yourself in a world of hurt.

Are you convinced yet?

Cydia Alternatives:

If you still aren’t sure, check out one of these free alternatives that don’t need a jailbreak to work:

TweakBox App:

TweakBox is the most popular alternative, offering tons of modified apps and games, along with a few tweaks and official app store content. It is free to use and every app and game in it is also free.

Emus4U Installer:

Emus4U is another popular choice, offering tweaks, modified games, tweaked apps and some of the best Cydia tweaks. Here you will find games emulators, screen recorders and much more.

So what do we have?

We have an excellent app store, filled with content not found anywhere else. It’s free with a jailbreak tool and is safe to use.
